Badges for the Apollo launches came in many “flavors.” Each mission’s badges were color-coded to indicate the facility accessible by the wearer. Badges also sometimes had colored stripes of tape to denote special access privileges. On launch day, many of the VIPs in the Operations Management Room or Visitors Gallery also wore the launch badges that were issued to people invited to witness the launch at KSC.
Apollo 7’s Firing Room was in the blockhouse at Pad 34, where the vehicle was launched. All subsequent manned launches were from the Complex 39 LCC. All three Firing Rooms at the LCC were used for Apollo missions:
-
-Firing Room 1 launched Apollos 4 (AS-501, unmanned), 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, and 17.
-
-Firing Room 2 launched Apollos 6 (unmanned), 9, 12, and 14.
-
-Firing Room 3 launched Apollo 10.
Each Firing Room communicated with a specific Mobile Launcher (ML), onto which a launch vehicle was erected. For example, the Saturn V rockets for Apollos 10, 11, and 12 were all in various stages of processing in the spring of 1969. Apollo 10 was stacked on ML-3, which was controlled by Firing Room 3. Apollo 11 was stacked on ML-1, which was connected to the terminals in Firing Room 1. Apollo 12 was stacked on ML-2, which was controlled by Firing Room 2.
