There were 440 people at the consoles in a Firing Room during each Apollo launch. A further 60 people manned the spacecraft-related consoles in the Operations and Checkout (O&C) Building at KSC. These 500 engineers and managers were supported by staff in the support rooms, who could quickly diagnose problems that arose during countdown.
In addition to the photo ID badges worn by employees and contractors, mission-specific badges were issued. There were a wide variety of badges within each mission, designating areas of the Launch Complex - and the launch vehicle - that could be accessed.
Despite the large number of people involved in the launches, precious few examples of the access badges from the Firing Rooms are available today. Most were returned to Security after the launch, but some people retained their badges, and these have occasionally become available to collectors.
